Language and Literacy

When your little one is learning how to talk and respond to questions, a LOT is going on! Did you ever notice how it takes longer for them to respond? I see this all the time when I speak with  my LLFs who are just beginning to talk.

4 different parts of the brain are working together to form their response. That's why it is so important to be patient and wait- sometimes 6-12 seconds even- for their response. Just to give you a perspective- adults respond typically within 2 seconds.

This not only allows them time to practice which will allow them to respond more quickly over time, but also provides a positive atmosphere in which they feel comfortable in trying. When children are cut-off, feel rushed or pressured, or have a negative reaction from someone, this can discourage them from trying to speak which will impact their development.

Language and Literacy

Remember the 6 Skills of Early Literacy? Well, here is a GREAT way of developing your child's phonological awareness! It helps them hear the smaller sounds in words...

Super duper 1,2,3!
Can you say this word with me?

Library. Say it. Library
Clap it! LI-BRAR-Y
Tap it! LI-BRAR-Y
Pat it! LI-BRAR-Y

Use this fun little chant with any new word! Clap hands, tap foot, pat knees or head.
