Six Skills for Early Literacy- Day by Day

There are 6 early literacy skills that serve as the foundation for learning to read and write. I will introduce one skill daily with tips and suggestions on how to help your child develop these skills.

Print Motivation- This is more of an attitude than a skill!

This is being excited about and interested in books. Getting a child excited about reading and books is the first step. Babies learn to emote by mirroring our feelings and enthusiasm. When you have a strong reaction to something, they notice. They don't know they are having fun until you tell them! Well, tell them books are exciting and fun and enjoyable by projecting those feelings when sharing books.

Cuddle and snuggle when reading before bed. There will be a connection between that warm, loving time and books. Be silly, goofy and use funny voices and there will be a connection between the fun memories and books. Never make it a bad experience- forcing them to sit still when they don't want to or reprimanding them for not listening, because there will be a connection between the negative experience and books as well.

So, read books that excite them. If they love trains, read train books. If they love princesses, read books about princesses. Read the same book over and over and over and over and over and over and over again if they want to because that is how they learn - through repetition. Have fun and enjoy books together each day! Make time to let them know it is an important part of their day.
