Language and Literacy

When your little one is learning how to talk and respond to questions, a LOT is going on! Did you ever notice how it takes longer for them to respond? I see this all the time when I speak with  my LLFs who are just beginning to talk.

4 different parts of the brain are working together to form their response. That's why it is so important to be patient and wait- sometimes 6-12 seconds even- for their response. Just to give you a perspective- adults respond typically within 2 seconds.

This not only allows them time to practice which will allow them to respond more quickly over time, but also provides a positive atmosphere in which they feel comfortable in trying. When children are cut-off, feel rushed or pressured, or have a negative reaction from someone, this can discourage them from trying to speak which will impact their development.
